Nature on your doorstep
Immediately adjacent to Water Colour are the Holmethorpe Lagoons
Nature Reserves, owned and managed by the Surrey Wildlife Trust.
The nature reserve consists of two lagoons, surrounded by woods, scrub and wildflower rich grassland.
The North Lagoon will be mainly open water with reed fringes and floating reed islands; at the western end there is a sandbank that acts as a nesting site for Sand Martins. The South Lagoon is more of a wetland habitat, with extensive reed beds and areas of wet woodland containing Willow, Alder and Birch.
Birds are the most evident wildlife to be seen and heard on the reserve. Along the waters edge flocks of Waders scour the mud banks and shallows for food. On the open water you will see mute Swans, Little and Great Crested Grebe, several species of Wildfowl, Cormorants, Moorhens and Coots.
Many different species of wildlife make the reeds their home; you might hear Reed Warbles and Bunting perhaps even a Booming Bittern. Also known to make this their habitat are Water Voles, Water Shrew and Harvest Mice.
During the day you can see Swallows swooping and gliding across the surface of the lagoons and dragonflies and damselflies weave back and fourth, replaced in the evening bats that can be seen as they hunt down flying insects.
Frogs, toads, newts and grass snakes all haunt the twilight zone on the land and in the water, what attracts them all is the vast array of insects and mini beasts living near, on or in the water and the rich variety of plant life. Beneath the surface live many interesting and unusual creatures such as dragonfly nymphs and water boatman and many, many more. Some of the plants, such as mint, woundwort, wild blackcurrant and angelica have been around for thousands of years and have been previously used for foods and medicines.
So escape to the country when the town is only a heartbeat away.
