Corporate Responsibility

At Galliford Try, we define Corporate Responsibility (CR) as the “the management of our economic, environmental and social responsibilities to benefit our stakeholders and future generations”.

CR is our response as a business to the sustainable development agenda. How we co-ordinate and manage our corporate responsibilities, in the products and services we offer and run, is key to our long-term future success. Our responsibilities span the following areas of the business:

  • Health and safety
  • Our people
  • Environment and climate change
  • Communities
  • Procurement and supply chain
  • Corporate governance
  • Economic sustainability

How we manage CR

In the last year, Galliford Try has undertaken a step-change in our management of CR. A CR manager was appointed to take responsibility for day-to-day affairs, liase with individual businesses, and coordinate activities across the Group. He reports progress to the Executive Board on a monthly basis.

Our Chief Executive is ultimately responsible for CR (he signs the policy statement). A CR steering committee, appointed by the Executive Board and chaired by an executive board member, consists of operational and services directors. It meets on a quarterly basis to address key issues and promote cross-group initiatives.

Each area of responsibility has a person or group that oversees and co-ordinates activity:

Environment and Climate Change

We acknowledge that climate change is one of the greatest challenges we face, both as a business and a society. We recognise that we have a key part to play through:

  • Our direct carbon footprint
  • The long term sustainability of the services we provide
  • The relationships with our clients, customers and the communities in which we work provide a great opportunity to positively influence

We aim to protect the environment in everything that we do, and minimise the impact of our operations. Our commitment to improving the Group’s knowledge about environmental issues continues, with over 1,400 employees attending our in-house environmental course. In addition, our Health Safety and Environmental advisers, who regularly carry out site inspections, have all completed a four day IOSH-accredited environmental training course.

During 2008 we commenced a Group-wide initiative to monitor and report our waste management performance. The results showed the proportion of waste diverted from landfill was 90.5%.

2009 has been the first year we have participated as a member in the NextGeneration sustainability initiative. Started in 2006 to benchmark the top 25 UK housebuilders on a range of sustainability and climate change issues, this initiative is overseen by a committee including Insight Investment, the World Wildlife Fund, the Homes and Communities Agency and Bank of Scotland.

The 2009 benchmark results have just been announced and we are very pleased to have secured 8th place out of 25, up from 15th last year. This demonstrates our commitment to improving our standards and performance.

Linden Homes - Watercolour, Surrey

Linden Homes’ Watercolour development, currently under construction in Surrey, is a mixture of 500 private and affordable homes due for completion in 2011. In partnership with the Surrey Wildlife Trust and local authority, Linden has regenerated a disused quarry site to include a wildlife area and nature reserve which has encouraged new life back into the local environment, the cycleways and paths provided allow for the local community to enjoy this new area.

Communities

Our work with communities is driven by the regional businesses. At this level, the businesses have a greater understanding of community needs and know the most effective and appropriate channels through which to engage.

Community involvement often takes the form of educational visits to schools near our developments, where we can talk about site safety. At a different level, we liaise with public services such as police, fire and ambulance; and on our larger projects we appoint liaison officers or teams to distribute information and collate feedback from exhibitions, public meetings and presentations. On major developments, we frequently take part in workshops and consultations with the local community to ensure that their views are taken on board.

Although a wide range of individual fundraising events take place across Galliford Try, there is no single chosen Group charity. This provides regional sites and offices with the freedom to support charities at a local level. As members of CRASH, we take part in business action for homeless people, and are sponsors of the Lighthouse Club, the charity that helps former employees of the construction industry.

Stamford Homes - Freshney Green Yarborough, Grimsby

This ambitious, landmark £50 million scheme involves the demolition of hundreds of old local authority houses, which will be gradually replaced during the next eight years with nearly 450 innovative and high quality homes.

The company’s strategy for community involvement started with a two year in-depth consultation process and continues today. It encompassed, a study tour and walkabout of the Yarborough estate where residents themselves were asked to express their views, likes and dislikes on a number of issues that ranged from buildings, layout and access to public transport and whether the streets should be pedestrian, cycle or vehicle friendly. Children of the estate were given disposable cameras and being asked to discuss play, its importance, what activities should be included and where it should take place. Involvement and communication continues with a quarterly newsletter, which keeps residents up to date with progress and gives them a forum for feedback and highly successful initiatives like inviting children from the local Yarborough Primary School to choose the development’s name – Freshney Green.
